*- What is a lei? (Pictured Above)
A lei is a Hawaiian garland/wreath that are usually presented to somebody for a special occasion or the arrival, departure, or celebration for someone on the island. Most lei are usually made of plumeria or orchids. You can also get lei that are made of kukui nuts. (Kukui nuts are nuts that that you can find on Hawaiian mountains) They can range from basic kukui nuts lei with leaves to painted kukui nuts and even kukui nuts with college football teams and NFL teams painted on them. Kukui nut lei are traditional given to men and keiki (children), while flower lei are given to women.
Fun Fact-
It is considered disrespectful to give a pregnant women a closed lei because legend says that if you do so then the umbilical cord will be wrapped around the child's neck upon birth. If you give a lei to a pregnant women, make sure that it is an open lei!
